"Los Angeles is surrounded by valleys, but there's only one Valley..."
Hush Money, by Peter Israel
Another reader agrees that the old, since-razed Northridge Elementary School at Reseda Boulevard and Nordhoff Street remained open at least until 1959.
Hi Kevin,
I love the site and the book too, and I'm glad to see both are back. I saw the post about Northridge Elementary. I went there when my family moved to Northridge in '57, and continued to go there through '59, until Darby Ave. school was opened in my neighborhood. So I know it was still a functioning school past '58. I don't recall it boarded up anytime soon after that. There were so many new housing developments at that time, many new schools were built to accommodate all of those kids.
We lived in Westwood and I remember driving out to the valley every Sunday when my folks were shopping for our house. The housing developers would put out lunch buffets to attract customers, and have playgrounds and other things to keep the kids occupied. I told my friends that I was moving to "the valley", they didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about.
Thanks for the memories,
Andrea
