"Los Angeles is surrounded by valleys, but there's only one Valley..."
Hush Money, by Peter Israel
Chuck Maiden grew up on Lorne Street in Canoga Park (1954-72) and writes:
Like many kids of the mid-sixties, I learned to play guitar and formed a band with my friends. We used to practice in the backyard of our guitarist whose family lived on a large lot full of fruit trees near the corner of Roscoe and DeSoto. Across the wash bordering their property, the band, "Fraternity of Man" rehearsed. They're best known for their mock-country tune, "Don't Bogart That Joint". I also remember seeing Canned Heat's truck rolling around town. I went to school with a girl who was Jay Fergusen's sister. Jay was the lead singer of "Spirit" who hailed from Chatsworth High School. My first concert was at The Valley Music Theatre where I saw The Seeds. I also saw Iron Butterfly, The Animals and many others there. Unfortunately, I missed the famed Doors/Buffalo Springfield/Byrds show. I do remember seeing then-unknown Steppenwolf performing, at the end of the show, the song, "The Pusher" while the lights came on and people apparently unimpressed, began filing out
One last thought...anybody remember "The Slide" at Topanga Plaza in the late sixties? It was a huge plastic multi-laned curvey slide which people rode down on gunney sacks.
I remember the slide, Chuck. Someone also wrote in recently looking for photos of the tall dripping fountain that was inside the original Topanga Plaza in the 1960s.
