"Los Angeles is surrounded by valleys, but there's only one Valley..."
Hush Money, by Peter Israel
Even with careful research and editing, mistakes sometimes creep in to a manuscript. This is where I correct them.
On page 4 of the first edition only, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains is misstated as Calabasas Peak. The 3,111-foot mountain is actually Sandstone Peak.
On page 16 in the first edition, earthquake fatality Clarence Wayne Dean is incorrectly identified as an officer with the California Highway Patrol. Officer Dean was a veteran motor officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. He died driving to work in the dark after the Jan. 17, 1994 earthquake when his motorcycle plunged off a freeway bridge in Newhall Pass that had partially collapsed.
Also in the first printing only, the L.A. Times photograph on page 109 shows a Lockheed assembly line manufacturing P-38 pursuit planes. The caption erroneously describes the craft as Lodestar transports.
