"Los Angeles is surrounded by valleys, but there's only one Valley..."
Hush Money, by Peter Israel
Sue Jarrett Prout of Van Nuys sends along this link to a detailed history page on the CBS Studio Center and its past as the Mack Sennett studios and the home of Republic Pictures. Her dad worked there. Thanks Sue. She also appends her own recollections of some unofficial Valley landmarks:
Herbert's Drive-in Restaurant on the south-east corner of Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd. Curries Ice Cream Store with a huge Ice Cream Cone on top on the north-west corner of Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd. Vantage Pharmacy (the only one I remember in town) on the south-east corner of Vantage and Ventura Blvd. Studio City Theater (remnants still remain). The Bowling Alley where most of the men got their hair cut. Eaton's Restaurant at the end of Radford on Ventura. Charley Foys on the north east corner of Coldwater and Ventura. The old burlesque house where Lily St Cyr and Gypsy Rose Lee performed. Just east of Carpenter on Ventura. Stop and Shop Market with Lonnie's Liquor Store inside. The Sportsmens Lodge (only a restaurant in the 40's and you could go fishing in their ponds). Rathbun's Department Store in North Hollywood. Scobys Restaurants. Van de Camps with the Windmills on top. Errands Bakery on the corner of Lankershim and Moorpark. Fitzimons Market on the south-east corner of Coldwater and Ventura.
That's enough for now. Thank you for your web site. I love reminiscing. Wish everyone could know the Valley as it once was. What a lovely place it was back then.
