"Los Angeles is surrounded by valleys, but there's only one Valley..."

Cinnamon Cinder and Helms trucks

Sharp-eyed reader Steve Beasley caught an unfortunate omission in the recent entry on Grace Hayes Lodge in Gone But Not Forgotten. The lodge (really a restaurant) was a celebrity hangout in the 1940s at 11345 Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. The entry noted this and also mentioned that the site was later the Magic Mushroom club and is now Platinum Live.

What the entry left out was the most famous connection to that site: it was also the location of the Cinnamon Cinder teen club in the 1960s. The Cinder, of course, was the club where the Beatles made a not-so-secret appearance during their first visit to Los Angeles on August 23, 1964. Thanks to Steve for reminding us of the connection.

Another visitor to the website, Stephen Jenkins, wrote to ask what became of another Valley landmark:

The heck with Krispy Kremes, did you ever have the privilege of flagging down the Helms bakery truck on Saturday mornings, when they use to roam the neighborhoods, and tasting those incredible donuts and pastries? My favorite. Crispy, chocolate covered, and still warm from the oven. I have never tasted anything like them since. Another great experience gone with the passage time and the increase in gas prices, I guess. What I wouldn't give to taste one of those again. What happened?

Helms trucks had become a thing of the past by 1969, when the bakery itself went out of business. For a brief history at another website, click here (new window will open).
